A closer look
A deck of cards, three bands of colour. Grey, white and ochre stack up like the cards themselves. The texture of the paper shows through the paint and keeps the scene light and quiet.

The artist
Cédric Toussaint Pico
Cédric Toussaint Pico is a Belgian painter . He never works from photographs: everything is painted from life, right in front of the subject. A glass vase, a deck of cards, a damaged car, his own face in the mirror. He picks the small things we see every day and stop noticing. His paintings are simple and quiet, often with a touch of melancholy, and they leave you not quite sure what you’re feeling. That’s the point: they make you look again at the ordinary.
